Annual Flower Show

Our 21st Annual Flower show was a success. We had 72 Adult entries; evenly split between design and horticulture. The number last year was 66. We also had 33 children’s entries which was down slightly from last year. A total of 209 attended the Flower Show (not counting members). This was an increase over last year.

Presented by Regina Haring.  Regina discussed the Haring family history in the Hudson Valley.  She mentioned interesting differences between the early English vs. Dutch settlers. Regina had original Dutch documents and a beautiful coverlet from 1835 on view. A Business Meeting and Distribution of Member Booklets followed. Some of the topics of the business meeting included the establishment of a Sunshine Committee to send an appropriate gift from the club to members who have lost a close loved one or who are recovery from surgery or illness. Increasing funding to community projects to $350 each during 2014; participation in Keep Rockland Beautiful; a Gala proposed for 2015 with funds going to charity.

The theme of the Flower Show was “Articulture”.  As soon as we entered the main room it was as if Spring had arrived.  The displays were colorful and creative. We saw displays that reflected the works of great artists from all areas of art from painting and sculpture to theater and movies.  The marketplace area was filled with garden related booths.   When we returned to the bus we enjoyed reviewing what we saw and what we purchased in anticipation of another gardening season.
