The Garden Club of Nyack was founded in 1912 by Mrs. Joseph Hilton, and is one of the oldest garden clubs in New York State. When the Federated Garden Clubs of New York was organized in 1924, Nyack was a charter member.
The club has a long history of contributing to local civic beautification projects, including an early rear garden at the library, trees and flowering shrubs at Memorial Park and evergreens in the courtyard of the high school on Fifth Avenue.
During World War II the club encouraged the planting of Victory Gardens and was awarded a government citation in recognition of their efforts.
To jump to the 21st century, the Garden Club created a lovely Butterfly Habitat Garden by the river in Memorial Park in 2000, which it continues to maintain. It has also contributed plantings to the YMCA, to the Hopper House and the Liberty Street School historic marker site, and has now taken on the grounds of the Old Stone Meeting House on North Broadway as well as assisting with the improvement of the landscaping of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
For eighteen years the Garden Club of Nyack has organized and run an annual Flower Show. In recent years this show has been held at the Upper Nyack Elementary School. Children are encouraged and shown how to participate and to learn how to work both individually and cooperatively to enter the show.
The 2011 Flower Show will be held on Saturday, April 9th. Watch this site for more information.
